What Is Pentosan?

Pentosan is a medication for arthritis. It is sometimes referred to by one of its trade names, Cartrophen. Pentosan is a safe and effective treatment for osteoarthritis and related musculoskeletal disorders in dogs, with over 20 years of use in veterinary medicine. By modifying the underlying arthritic processes, it relieves pain and lameness. Pentosan works to stop cartilage breakdown and stimulate the body’s production of both cartilage and joint fluid. Additionally, it helps promote cartilage growth and deliver essential nutrients to joints.

How Is It Given?

Pentosan is administered via injection by a veterinarian, eliminating the need for daily oral pain medication.

Initially, a course of four injections is given over a four-week period. After this, Pentosan is typically administered every three months, although the treatment regimen can be adjusted to accommodate the severity of the dog’s arthritis.
